Quick Update

I love Nandita Das. I love her style of acting and I think she’s the true definition of Indian beauty, not these other barbie dolls they have prancing around on screen all the time.

Anyway, here’s a link to one of her greatest (and one of my favorite) films called ‘Fire’ by Deepa Mehta. It was a highly controversial film among certain more conservative quarters in India due to its depictions of gender, marriage, and homosexuality and particularly because of use of the names of Hindu goddesses with characters and portraying these characters as lesbians.

Deepa Mehta: “Lesbianism is just another aspect of the film…Fire is not a film about lesbians, but rather about the choices we make in life.”

Synopsis

Fire

When I have time, I’m going to watch ‘Nishant’. It’s a 1975 movie about the power of the rural elite and the sexual exploitation of women. It stars my other favorite actress Shabana Azmi, so there’s another good reason to watch it.
